Engine Overheats: Troubleshooting

Engine Overheats:

  • Bad temperature guage or sending unit.
  • Bad cooling system thermostat.
  • Broken cooling fan belts.
  • Low oil level or incorrect grade/type of oil used.
  • Engine brake exhaust valve stuck in closed position.
  • Blocked radiator or deposit on water jacket walls.
  • Excessive engine exhaust system back pressure.
  • Excessive rolling resistance due to dragging brakes or low tire pressures.
  • Excessive engine friction.
  • Use of a winter front.

Engine Does Not Reach Operating Temperature:

  • Bad cooling system thermostat.
  • Bad temperature guage or sending unit.
